Harry Potter — Edible Activity Sets
Mattel, Inc.
Ages 8 and Up

What It Is

As any Harry Potter fan knows, students at Hogwarts are always whipping up all kinds of things–some of them nasty and some of them pretty fun. And most kids would love to be able to work some of that magic themselves. Believe it or not, now they can with the ingenious Harry Potter — Edible Activity Sets. If you remember the extremely popular Dr. Dreadful sets of about five years ago, that’s basically what this is with the Harry Potter license.

For example, Professor Snape’s Potions Class" is an activity set that will let kids try their hands at "magically" brewing potions and edible treats. The magical potions fizz and change colors with the help of the cauldron’s (battery operated) self-stirring wand.

Professor Sprout’s Fungus Fieldtrip is an activity set that will let them "plant," "grow" and eat insects and fungi! (We know, parents — ewwww! Well, kids seem to like it, at any rate.)

Why It’s Fun

These activity sets will allow kids to feel that they are a part of Harry Potter’s magical world with "alchemy-like" activities and creative play. (It’s amazing what sugar, baking soda and water can do when combined with a fertile imagination.) Kids love pretending they have magical powers, and the Edible Activity Sets transform them into wizard-like versions of Wolfgang Puck and Julia Child. With these sets, children will delight in magically mixing potions that they can really drink and yummy treats they can eat. Its gooey, ooey, delicious fun!

Who’s Going To Love It

This is really ideal for kids who want to pretend to be wizards and who will enjoy the reactions of the various elements. The clever designs for the playsets allow kids to really imagine they’re in the dungeons of Hogwarts learning all kinds of magical stuff. (The good news is there are only the fun charms here.) Kids will love that their experiments are edible, so every effort will result in a great-tasting success. Throw in the mystery and enchantment of Harry Potter’s world and you have a recipe for success.

What To Be Aware Of

Review all ingredients to avoid any possible allergic reactions. Adult assistance is required to install batteries. It’s a good idea to set this up in a kitchen or a controlled environment in case of spills. The major ingredient in all of this is sugar, so parents and caregivers may want to monitor how much sugar kids consume in one play session.
