What It Is
One of the most time-honored classic play patterns is construction. Kids love it, and it’s an important form of play because it requires that kids visualize something in their minds and then create it in the real world. This is simple conceptual thinking, and it is an important skill that is necessary for virtually any learning. Best of all kids love it.
With Airblox, construction combines the fun of building with the classic play of “making forts.” Or in this case, castles, houses or whatever they imagine.
Airblox are sturdy vinyl blocks that have an inflatable perimeter and a vinyl membrane in the middle. They are easily inflated with the included pump and create lightweight, but large pieces. The pieces are hooked together with flexible clamps, and kids can build all kinds of configurations using the step-by-step instructions. And, of course, they can build anything they imagine.
The building is only half the fun, however. Once constructed, kids use their creations as a springboard for imaginative play. And the pieces are easily disassembled and reassembled in any kind of configuration.
Why It’s Fun
This is a toy that is completely powered by kids’ imaginations. Kids 4 and up literally spent hours not only building but creating play scenarios that kept them occupied and engaged.
The toy works well in solo play, but it’s best with a group of kids who can interact and learn to cooperate in the construction.
What makes this such a great item, however, is that it’s powered by kids’ imaginations. They are truly in control of the open-ended play experience and the ability to build something that’s bigger than they are holds a real fascination for kids.
For every kid who’s ever built a fort with card tables and sheets, this is exactly the same creative play pattern—without the risk of messing up the family linens.
Who’s Going To Love It
This is most fun for kids in the 4-7 age range. They are the ones most likely to create forts, castles and build imaginative play around the creations. At the same time, older kids certainly enjoyed it when they were playing with younger friends or siblings. Under 4, the kids love playing in and around the structures, but they don’t have the fine motor skills to build easily with the sets.
What To Be Aware Of
The pump is easy to use, and the blocks have a special valve that keeps the blocks from deflating as you pump it up. The vinyl is sturdy, easily cleaned, and the set comes with a patch kit in the very unlikely event of a puncture. |
