Quantum Pad Learning

Ages 8 to 11 (Grades 3-5)

What It Is

The Quantum Pad Learning System is a highly imaginative and effective tool designed to make learning fun and interactive. About the size of a laptop computer, this system uses books and accompanying cartridges to engage kids with games, activities, sounds and pictures to reinforce fundamental skills kids are learning in school such as math, science, history and more.

Kids use an interactive pen to work through the book. LeapFrog has developed what it calls “near touch” technology, so that when the child touches the pen to specific spots on the page, the book and the software can interact. The result is a very rich learning/play/exploration experience for kids.

The Quantum Pad is a more “grown-up” version of LeapFrog’s successful LeapPad, with content designed to mirror the standard curricula of grades 3-5.

Why It’s Fun

The Quantum Pad Learning System comes with an interactive sampler book with images and sounds that are colorful and vibrant. The voice that walks you through each section of the book is pleasant and entertaining. For example, in a section on the Solar System, the book opens to a full-page graphic of our Solar System and delivers information about each planet when the pen is touched to the planet. In another section, kids are quizzed on state capitals in a fun game format.

Who’s Going To Love It

Although many products claim to make learning fun for kids, not all of them actually deliver on that promise. Quantum Pad Learning System is one of the few that definitely lives up to that challenge by making the process interactive. Whereas many learning toys specialize in rote memorization of facts, the Quantum Pad helps develop a context for the information kids are acquiring, which helps reinforce learning . This is a great item for kids who want to get ahead in school as well as those who need a little extra help with their studies.

What To Be Aware Of
The Quantum Pad Learning System comes with one interactive sampler book—additional books are sold separately. This system also works with all LeapPad books and cartridges. The system requires 4 “AA” batteries, not included.

Though the Quantum Pad looks a lot cooler than LeapFrog’s LeapPad, the books and cartridges for older children will work with the original item.

While LeapFrog has invested heavily in curriculum development, and the product is excellent in this regard, no learning toy takes the place of a child’s assigned schoolwork, and parents and caregivers are encouraged to be involved with the kids as they experience any educational toy.
