What It Is
"Video Buddy" is an interactive play system consisting of a hand-held
control unit and any one of several videos that can be purchased separately
for the game. The game unit has five colorful buttons as inputs and is attached
to a television screen via a cord with a suction cup sensor. The "Video
Buddy" character appears once the tape is playing and instructs the child
on how to answer questions, take quizzes and play games with the playset during
the video. The videos are cartoons of "Paddington Bear," "Dino
Babies" and "Muppet Babies," among others, as well as a special
episode of "The Big Comfy Couch." The video stories emphasize memory
and comprehension, shapes and colors, as well as social development.
Why Its Fun
"Video Buddy" involves the child in the play experience by while
it tells an interesting story. The questions that the child answers throughout
the videos keep the child "in" the story, while challenging them at
the same time. Answering questions correctly develops a sense of accomplishment
in a friendly environment.
Whos Going To Love It
Smaller children are most likely to enjoy, and be captivated by, "Video
Buddy." Children ages 5 and up may find the quizzes and questions too easy,
but still may enjoy the cartoons. Parents will appreciate the educational aspect
of the game system.
What To Be Aware Of
"Video Buddy" is as close to true interactive play as a game can
get these days without requiring a console system or a computer; all that is
required is a VCR and a television. The game set-up is a breeze; just attach
the suction cup to the designated spot on the television screen and begin to
play. Although the video will not stop to wait for a child to answer, it gives
ample time for answers to be given.
