What It Is

Journal Entry. Day 1. Today, I relaxed on the beach and watched the birds fly by, went for a swim in the sea and then went to Grandma’s for my birthday gift – a new green suit. After, I practiced my swordsmanship and combat skills with some of Grandma’s kooky neighbors and chased pigs for a while. Hmm, I wonder what that gigantic bird wants . . .

Welcome to the latest and possibly greatest game in the Legend of Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for the Nintendo Game Cube. Once again, our hero, Link, has an epic adventure ahead of him, which begins on his birthday when his sister is kidnapped by a giant bird. Link must leave his peaceful island and travel the Great Sea using a magical baton called the Wind Waker to control the wind. Link battles incredibly animated enemies, explores richly detailed environments and wields new items like a telescope, Deku Leaf and, most importantly, the Wind Waker. In addition to controlling the wind, The Wind Waker can also be used to compose songs that control wind patterns and even summon cyclones. Similar to the games Ocarina of Time and Oracle of Ages, Link learns many songs on his quest, which the player must perform to advance in the game.

Why It’s Fun

You may have heard about what some are calling a “controversial new look” for Link in Wind Waker. Our dashing hero is now a cute toon-shaded anime character and he looks great! Link’s new look, and the entire game itself, features some incredible visuals and stunning animation. Link’s eyes not only show emotions, but also provide hints and spot danger. But don’t worry, Wind Waker is more than just great visual effects; the storyline, action and battle sequences, challenging puzzles and hidden surprises are classic Zelda.

Who’s Going To Love It

Wind Waker is probably the most anticipated game of the year for the Game Cube. In fact, more than 560,000 people pre-ordered it. This is the ninth Zelda game since the original, The Legend of Zelda, premiered in 1987. Over the years, Link, Zelda and their pals have developed quite a following, selling more than 36 million Zelda games worldwide. This latest installment, The Wind Waker, will knock the socks off anyone who plays it, even if they have never played or seen any of the previous eight Zelda games.

What To Be Aware Of

The Wind Waker has an added secret, which can be unlocked with a Nintendo Game Boy Advance. Hook your Game Boy Advance (GBA) up to your Game Cube with the GBA Cable and you can tune in Tingle, the mapmaker, who helps Link along his adventure.
