What It Is
Kingdom Hearts, the PlayStation 2 role playing video game, is the story of Sora, a 14- year-old boy whose world is shattered when a storm hits his island home and separates him from his two closest friends. The storm scatters the three to different and unknown worlds.

At the same time, there’s turmoil in Disney castle. King Mickey is missing and Donald the Wizard and Captain Goofy set out to find him, meeting Sora along their journey. The three discover that the Disney Villains are using creatures know as the Heartless, who are responsible for the storm, to gather the Disney princesses of heart, who are needed to open a mysterious door.

Why It’s Fun

This is an incredibly imaginative game that combines characters developed by Tetsuya Nomura, best known for his creations in the Final Fantasy games, with some very familiar Disney characters in not so familiar roles. Over 100 Disney characters appear in the game, including Jafar from Aladdin, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Hades from Hercules, and Alice from Alice in Wonderland, among others.

This action-packed game features an all-star voice cast including Haley Joel Osmet, Sean Astin, Mandy Moore, Billy Zane and Lance Bass. In addition, many of the original Disney film stars are reprising their roles for Kingdom Hearts.

Who’s Going To Love It

First and foremost, Kingdom Hearts will appeal to fans of RPGs (Role Playing Games). Diehard gamers will be eager to play because of the heavy Final Fantasy influence and don’t forget Disney fans who will get to see and interact with some of their favorite characters in totally new roles.

What To Be Aware Of

Like most RPGs, this is a one-player adventure game that will provide gamers with countless hours of play-time but once the game has been played through to the end, will likely be relegated to the gamers “no-play zone.”

Despite the fact that this is a Disney game, it may be too difficult and slightly over the heads of younger children. While the game helps older players see classic Disney characters in a whole new light, the idea of Donald Duck wielding a staff in combat may seem incongruous. Though the characters are fighting, however, they do not have weapons that do any more than stun the opposing characters.
