What It Is
Did you know that May 19 – May 26th is National Backyard
Games Week? It’s true. This week is dedicated to getting
outside and getting physical. To celebrate the 6th Annual National
Backyard Games, Patch Products, Inc., a sponsor of this pre-summer
kickoff, is introducing a line of toys called the Backyard Games
line. This line takes three classic backyard games and adds
a molded foam ball and game rules that should get kids up, out
and active.
Freeze Tag
In this Patch Products Game you have two foam balls, the ice
ball and the fire ball. Whoever is “it,” holds onto
the ice ball and has to tag another player with it to freeze
that player in his tracks. Once frozen, a player must be tagged
with the fire ball to start running again. All the players who
are not “it” share the fire ball and toss it or pass
it to anyone who needs it. If a player is tagged three times
by the “it” person with the ice ball, he or she is
now “it.”
Hot Pepper
Players stand in a circle and quickly pass the pepper in a random
pattern ala Hot Potato. While they are passing the pepper, players
chant the Hot Pepper chant, a catchy little number that ends
in, “Don’t get burned or YOU ARE OUT!” If you’re
holding the pepper at the end of the chant, you’re out
of the game and it starts all over again. The last player remaining
is the winner.
Spike Spike
This game comes with two doghouse goals (large plastic mats
with doghouses on them) that are placed on the ground about
sixty feet apart. Players divide into two teams and both pick
a goal to go for. The teams gather in the center spot between
the two goals and tip off as in basketball. The teams must then
try to spike Spike in the goal they choose. You can only run
five steps before you must pass Spike to a teammate. As in football,
you cannot pass forward, only laterally or backward. The opposing
team tries to touch Spike while he is in the air. If they touch
him or he hits the ground, the opposing team gets possession
from that spot. Each time you spike Spike into your team’s
goal you get a point. The team with the most points wins.
Why It’s Fun
What could be more fun than getting outside and having a good
old-fashioned game of Freeze Tag? These Patch toys add a little
something extra to those classic backyard games without taking
away from the fun and enjoyment of a simple game.

Obesity among children continues to be an issue facing many
parents today. In fact, Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher warned
that obesity in American children has reached epidemic levels.
With that in mind, any toy that encourages active outdoor play
should be highly appealing to parents and caregivers. So send
the kids out to play with these classic games.
